Joseph Charles Martyna Obituary - Cape Cod Times

Joseph Charles Martyna, of Falmouth, passed away peacefully at Falmouth Hospital on September 20, 2022. He was predeceased by his Father and Mother, John and Louise (Siembida) Martyna and also a younger brother Stanley David Martyna.

Born on March 4, 1930, Joseph grew up in Brooklyn, New York and graduated in 1948 from Haaren High School, a male technical high school in Manhattan, New York. He was 18 years old. After high school, Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force for three years in a program studying Jet Engine and Aircraft Mechanics. During this time the Korean War broke out and his enlistment was extended one more year by President Harry S. Truman.

After graduation from the program, he was transferred to Otis Air Force Base for three years. During this period Joe met the love of his life, Constance A. Kahler who was born and raised in Woods Hole. They dated during this period and after he received an honorable discharge they married on June 6, 1953, in Woods Hole.

They moved to East Hartford, CT and Joe worked as a Mechanic in the experimental Jet Engine Department at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company. Connie worked there as well. As a Korean War veteran, Joe took classes under the G.I. Bill of Rights and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors (Pi Tau Sigma.) He continued to work now as a Senior Experimental Test Engineer for many years.

When Pratt and Whitney decided to move to Florida, Joe accepted the position of Chief Engineer at Falmouth Hospital in 1963 while it was still under construction. While at Falmouth Hospital Joe continued his education and received his Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from Lesley University.

Joe worked at Falmouth Hospital for forty years attaining the position of Vice President of Support Services. Upon his retirement a plaque, a garden and a pink marble bench were dedicated for his many years of service.

Throughout Joe's adult life he was an active member of the Falmouth community. He served on the Finance committee for the town with acting for many years as its chairman. He was a Town Meeting Member from Precinct One. He was also an active member of the Quissett Yacht Club, The Quissett Harbor House Land Trust, The Woods Hole Golf Club, the Quamquissett Beach Club, the Quissett Harbor Preservation Trust and the Quissett Association. Joseph also received the Citizen of the Year Award for his many contributions to the Town of Falmouth and Falmouth Hospital.

Joe and Connie enjoyed traveling especially with friends. Vermont and Cancun were favorite destinations.

Joseph was above all a devoted husband, and a caring and loving father and grandfather. He leaves his wife of 68 years Constance A. Kahler, daughter Gwendolyn (Wendy), son Jonathan Whiles, and granddaughter Romey Kahler Hart-Martyna. He leaves his sister-in-law Elsa Martyna, niece Carol (Martyna) and husband Stanley Silverstein and children, and nephew Robert Martyna and children, and nephew Glenn Martyna. He also leaves cousin Henry Szot and wife Janet and children, cousin Irene Szot and son Eric and his partner Grudjina. Another cousin Derik and wife Jennifer and children and Carol and James Vinio and child.

Visitation will take place on Monday, October 3, 2022, from 11AM – 1 PM at Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 475 Main Street, Falmouth. A Memorial Service will follow at 1:30 PM at the Church of the Messiah, 22 Church Street, Woods Hole.
